FOOTY AND SPORTS COLOURS DAY

On the last day of Term 3, Osborne students were not dressed in their usual green uniform. Instead, the students were dressed in footy or sports colours to show what team they barrack for.

In Prep M, 7 children were wearing yellow and black because they are Richmond supporters. Go Tigers!DSC01571

There were 2 children wearing  black and white because they are Collingwood supporters. Go Magpies!DSC01573

There were 4 children wearing yellow and brown because they are Hawthorn supporters. Go Hawks!  DSC01577

There were 2 children wearing red, black and white because they are St Kilda supporters. Go Saints!DSC01579

There was 1 child wearing red, blue and white because she is a Western Bulldogs supporter and 1 child was wearing purple because he is a Melbourne Storm supporter. DSC01583

Mrs Mills was wearing red and blue and she is the only Melbourne Demons supporter in our class.

So the team with the most supporters in Prep M was Richmond!! Lots of little Tigers in Prep M!!

The whole school assembled in the gym, then one team at a time we proudly went up on the stage and our team’s song was played for us to sing along to and clap and cheer. DSC01557   DSC01537 DSC01529  DSC01541

There were 18 different footy teams. Some teams like Melbourne only had a few supporters and other teams like Hawthorn, Collingwood and Essendon were the most popular and had a huge following. It was great fun and we all loved being part of the AFL excitement.

Fun at the Pasar

We have been having quite a bit of fun with our prep ‘pasar’.  We set it up to be our own little market, buying and selling some of the things we are learning to name in Indonesian language.

We bought and sold

apel, pisang, nanas, wortel, arbei, jeruk, topi, buku and even ikan.  (A big THANKS must go to the Little Ossies who gave us their shopping baskets to use and their specially made apples, carrots and strawberries too.)

We made shop signs and prices and practised saying –

“Selamat siang.

Apa kabar? (Baik-baik saja)

Siapa namamu? (Nama saya Brody).

Terima kasih.

Sampai jumpa”

and of course we asked for our items using thier Indonesian names as well as “satu, dua, tiga” to say how many we wanted.IMGP1907 IMGP1908 IMGP1909 IMGP1910 IMGP1911 IMGP1912 IMGP1914 IMGP1915 IMGP1916 IMGP1917 IMGP1918 IMGP1919 IMGP1920 IMGP1921 IMGP1922

We even made ‘buka’ and ‘tutup signs to show if the toko was open or shut. Next time the shop keepers will be able to be the shoppers and vice versa.

Brody has brought in some Rupiah for us to play with this week. We’ve been learning to say seratus for 100, dua ratus for 200 , tiga ratus for 300, empat ratus for 400 and lima ratus for 500.   He has lots of seratus Rupiah coins and lima ratus Rupiah coins too.

It’s been lots and lots of fun.

AFL Premiership Cup and special medals come to Osborne!

DSC01500 DSC01503

We could feel the footy finals excitement at school today!  Josh’s dad Cam works for the AFL and we were very lucky that he was able to bring in the REAL 2014 AFL Premiership Cup, the Premiership medal, the 2014 Brownlow medal and the 2014 Norm Smith medal to show us.

DSC01499 DSC01494

We wonder which football team will have their name on the big shiny silver cup? Who will be the best player in the Grand Final to win the Norm Smith medal? Who has been the best and fairest player this footy season to win the Brownlow medal? In a few weeks time all this will be decided!

DSC01509 DSC01508DSC01511 DSC01510

DSC01504 Mr Fisher and Mrs Mills wish Melbourne were going to win the Premiership Cup. Maybe next year we will!!

DSC01506 How many times have Mrs Brown’s team Collingwood won the Grand Final?

DSCN5256 (3) Mrs Heron was VERY excited to hold the Premiership Cup because she is sure that her team Hawthorn are going to win the 2014 Grand Final. She even wanted to put yellow and brown ribbons on the Cup ready for the Hawks win!!

Thanks to Cam, it was amazing to be able to see the REAL Premiership Cup and special medals.

Jumping Sultana’s …

This week in Prep we have been looking at the sound ‘j’ – as in “Jumping Giant”.

In Prep W yesterday we became scientists and explored what would happen if we added water, bicarb soda, vinegar and sultanas …

We had clever guesses/had a hypothesis and we came up with a conclusion – thinking about why things happened. Have a look at our ‘Adobe Voice’ video to see what happened …

Opera comes to Osborne

On Tuesday, Little Ossies, along with the rest of the school were treated to a special performance of Cinderella by Opera Australia.

We started by heading over to the gym to join other grade levels. When we arrived at the gym we saw a ‘set/backdrop’ where there were windows and doors painted on big pieces of wood.

Waiting in the gym for the performance to begin.

The performance began with person playing Cinderella coming and getting ready to be Cinderella by dressing up in her clothes on stage.

The person who played the role of Cinderella started by getting dressed up from a big treasure chest of costumes.

There were 4 performers and we found some of the actions which they did very funny.

The person who played one of the Ugly Step Sisters pretended they were a moustache for the Prince. We laughed a lot when the moustache kept moving when the Prince stopped!

The performers all sang beautifully to live music played on the piano.

We thought that the performance was very special to see. When we got back to our classroom we got out our own box of dress ups and borrowed some from the music room to do some performances of our own.

We started with the story “There was a Princess Long Ago”.

We had people who were dressed up as a princess and a wicked fairy.

We also thought that it would be fun to tell stories using singing instead of speaking, so Miss Griffiths and the Little Ossies spent a lot of the day singing opera too!

We wonder what stories and performances will happen next in the Little Ossies class?

Harold and his Surprise

This week Little Ossies have had the privilege of meeting a tall giraffe named Harold.

Harold, along with his good friend Suzy, came in a special Life Education Van and spoke with us about keeping our bodies healthy and safe.

We had to find healthy foods.

We told Suzy the reasons why we chose the different healthy foods.

We got to use our knowledge of bodies to show where different organs went in the felt skin.

When we had almost finished our time in the van we all got to ask Harold some questions and then go and give him a pat. Of course there was a special visitor in the room as well, Eddy Teddy couldn’t help by come along to find out more about the human body and how to keep it healthy.

The surprising part of our visit was found in our classroom on the morning after our visit to the van.

Before school on Tuesday Harold had snuck into the Little Ossies classroom to deliver 3 big plates of delicious, healthy fruit.

Harold even left us a special note. We counted 14 kisses (which are written as X ) at the bottom of the letter. Can you work out why?

Life Education Investigations

Harold the healthy giraffe showed us how to be safe when having funwhile going to and playing in the park. Suzie taught us all about sometimes-foods and everyday-foods and she taught us about some of our body parts too. A group of our preps decided to create our own Life Education Van because Suzie and Harold had to leave us to visit other schools. The van they made for us has all the things that Harold had in his van. We  have the food wall, the video screen and picutres and even the ‘carpet man’ game with his stick-on body parts like lungs, heart, veins, stomach and a brain. Because ours is cardboard it was tricky to stop it from collapsing when we went inside but a few sticks with lots of tape solved the problem. The boys are now creating a schedule for visitors to choose a time-slot for their visit inside the van. You’ll have to put your name on the list in our room if you want to book a time for yourself. Pop in and see when it’s free.IMGP1895 IMGP1896 IMGP1898 IMGP1899  IMGP1902

Always up for a challenge, these preps now have an art gallery planned for part of their investigations. This first piece is ready and waiting for others to follow. IMGP1901 Stay tuned to see more at a later date as we imagine that this may take quite a while to do.

Fun Measuring

Just before we went to the gym for PMP, the preps and Little Ossies wondered whether our prep passageway was longer or shorter than the length of the gym. So, what did we do? We measured both of them. How did we measure them? We cut 30 one-metre lengths out of our silver bubble wrap (because we had lots of it sitting around waiting to be used) and we laid the strips from one end of the gym to the other. We counted the strips and measured the gym to be  32 and a half  metres long. Next came the passageway. This was much trickier for 2 reasons. Number 1. We didn’t have enough strips of bubble wrap to reach to the end of the passageway. Number 2: Lots of people were using the passageway (especially at the office end) so we couldn’t leave our silver bubble wrap strips lying on the floor while we counted them all. How did we solve these problems? We laid out 5 strips at a time and marked the 5 metre spot with masking tape. We marked out every 5 metres with sign/label to show how many metres it was and then we were able use the same strips again and again. Ask a prep how many metres our passageway is (Here’s a clue…..it’s longer than the gym) or pop in and read the measurements stuck to the floor.

Did you know that some of the preps are already really quick at counting by fives?
