Life Education Investigations

Harold the healthy giraffe showed us how to be safe when having funwhile going to and playing in the park. Suzie taught us all about sometimes-foods and everyday-foods and she taught us about some of our body parts too. A group of our preps decided to create our own Life Education Van because Suzie and Harold had to leave us to visit other schools. The van they made for us has all the things that Harold had in his van. We  have the food wall, the video screen and picutres and even the ‘carpet man’ game with his stick-on body parts like lungs, heart, veins, stomach and a brain. Because ours is cardboard it was tricky to stop it from collapsing when we went inside but a few sticks with lots of tape solved the problem. The boys are now creating a schedule for visitors to choose a time-slot for their visit inside the van. You’ll have to put your name on the list in our room if you want to book a time for yourself. Pop in and see when it’s free.IMGP1895 IMGP1896 IMGP1898 IMGP1899  IMGP1902

Always up for a challenge, these preps now have an art gallery planned for part of their investigations. This first piece is ready and waiting for others to follow. IMGP1901 Stay tuned to see more at a later date as we imagine that this may take quite a while to do.

Fun Measuring

Just before we went to the gym for PMP, the preps and Little Ossies wondered whether our prep passageway was longer or shorter than the length of the gym. So, what did we do? We measured both of them. How did we measure them? We cut 30 one-metre lengths out of our silver bubble wrap (because we had lots of it sitting around waiting to be used) and we laid the strips from one end of the gym to the other. We counted the strips and measured the gym to be  32 and a half  metres long. Next came the passageway. This was much trickier for 2 reasons. Number 1. We didn’t have enough strips of bubble wrap to reach to the end of the passageway. Number 2: Lots of people were using the passageway (especially at the office end) so we couldn’t leave our silver bubble wrap strips lying on the floor while we counted them all. How did we solve these problems? We laid out 5 strips at a time and marked the 5 metre spot with masking tape. We marked out every 5 metres with sign/label to show how many metres it was and then we were able use the same strips again and again. Ask a prep how many metres our passageway is (Here’s a clue…..it’s longer than the gym) or pop in and read the measurements stuck to the floor.

Did you know that some of the preps are already really quick at counting by fives?

Maths Fun

Here’s the problem. The farmer was counting as the animals went through the gate but then he realised that he’d been counting the legs of the animals. He’d counted 6 legs so the preps set about predicting the different combinations of animals which may have gone through the gate. We guessed that he could have had sheep, cows, horses, pigs, ducks, geese and chickens living on his farm. Have a look at the different combinations we came up with using our unifix blocks to model the problem. It was lots of fun and we had many different options/solutions.
